"viv" & MP42 video format s

I have been sent a video clip, apparently in *.viv format.

How can I play this? Are there codecs which can be used with existing
players, or does it require something dedicated?

Also, I have an .avi which fails to play, with the error:

        "... could not find vids:mp42 ..."

I have found a page which says:

MP42 is the four character code for the Microsoft MPEG-4 Video
Codec Version 2 (MPG4 is the four character code for Microsoft
MPEG-4 Video Codec Version 1). This codec is included in the
Windows Media Tools, formerly NetShow Tools, available, as of
        October 25, 1999, at
        >http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/>

but that URL contains nothing which seems to help. Any suggestions?

According to a quick search .viv is produced by Vivo Active, and
for which you need a plugin for Netscape or IE.

The player can be downloaded from www.vivo.com (it says here).

Typical M$ mess. They seem to have hidden the update, probably
because they want you to rush out and buy XP.

I'm not sure where I got this codec from - I'll have to have a
search of the archives on my machine tonight to see if I got it
anywhere other than from M$.

Also have a look for 'Angelpotion' - I have a recolection that
this collection of codecs was my source for this.

       Regards,
               Harry.

Maybe when hell freezes over I'll think about it.

Try:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/default.asp

In the 'Select Download' dropdown pick 'Codecs Download Package'

This includes codecs for MPG4 and MP42.
