Which Virus Checker?

Me again...

I have, for a while, had the luxury of being provided with a monthly
update of Sophos Sweep. This will shortly come to an end, and I must
find a replacement Virus checker.

I need a replacement which, like Sophos, is memory resident and checks
all files as they are accessed. are they all much of a muchness?

I have a free copy of Trend Micro's PC Cillin, provided by my on-line
bank - is that worth the candle?

I'm also a registered user of InoculateIT Personal Edition, though I've
never bothered to install it. I gather it's no longer free to new
registrants, but is to those already registered. Is it any good?

I'm using Win98SE

Nick Fitzgerald maintains a highly respected, Which?-style
consumer guide to all current Virus checkers.

Look at http://www.virusbtn.com/100/ for the current
best buys (including free ones).

Works for me, also under 98SE.

I have been using a (paid for) copy of PC Cillin for a few years now, and
have always found it to be excellent.

They update both the virus pattern files and basic engine very frequently
(automatically) and it is often more up-to-date than the checker we use at
work. Customer support is excellent, too.

Cheers,

Al

If you view the Viruses/Security link from the main page of my
computer club shown in my signature it lists TWO free virus checkers.

Re Innoculate IT - I found it good and updates are still free to
registered users.

Thanks, but:

AVG 6.0 Free Edition offer is not valid for European users,
except the users coming from United Kingdom. For these users we
offer a free download of a 30-day Trial version of AVG 6.0
Standard Edition for their evaluation purposes - see more
        information below.

BTW, if you prefix the URL in your sig with "http://", it will become
clickable in many newsreaders.

Of the three, which do you find best?

err, have we got a double negative problem here ?
I read their site, and your quote of it above, as meaning that

It is not valid for European users who can then/therfore/thus
download a 30-day trial

" except the users coming from United Kingdom"

-for whom it is valid- and who can thusly take advantage of
their Free Edition offer.
complexified init? is it worth it ? can you be bothered to mess
with it?

Dunno, just a thought, no bother to me.

Obviously a Blairish problem of are we in or are we out of Europe !
<G>

if ya wana a worn out sig
yer outta luck !

So, where's the problem? You're coming from the United Kingdom aren't
you? I've downloaded ANG Free Edition for several people and found it
very good. Updates are posted regularly, and you get email notification
whenever a significant update comes out. My experience has been all
good.

I don't know why the Free Edition is for UK and the USA only. Perhaps
it's only available as an English language edition...

InnoculateIT Personal Edition from Computer Asscociates is the same. Free
and whith sometimes twice weekly updates. THey're not giving it away for
free anymore from their website as it was a trial but if you can find it
lurking on a cover disk (PCFormat still have it on) you can still install
and register it FOC.

It was in Julys in the 50 essentials utilities section. Definitely in
Junes. If you can't find it e-mail me and I'll send you it.
