Out of Memory/ Help with TaskInfo

I have recently been experiencing problems with my machine locking up,
and/ or crashing, after slowing down to a crawl.

I suspect memory leakage. I have taken a snapshot of the system as it
was the last time things started to fail (Turnpike Offline crashed), and
placed it at:

        http://www.pigsonthewing.org.uk/taskinfo.jpg (144Kb)

I would be grateful if someone could tell me what's going on, and wrong,
or offer other assistance.

Incidentally, if I close all live applications, then do a restart, I
often get a message to say that "WRQNAM" cannot be closed. What is that,
and why own; it close?

Are you using AtGuard at all? This sounds like one of their files.

Looking at your snapshot, your user heap is at 22%, which is too
low. (Windows 9x has 64k limits on the GDI heap and user heap.)
As to how to find out what's causing this, it's a matter of trial
and error.

Run Resource Meter - it's a little app which comes with windows.
It shows the state of the 3 heaps in the system tray, and see if
running any particular application causes your user heap to drop
dramatically. Double clicking on it produces a larger display.

I also see you're running both ZoneAlarm and AtGuard - is this
really a good idea?

Seti@Home ??

I ran the Seti@Home program for a while but found it caused lockups/freezes
so I ditched it. That was however with the early versions - I ran it right
from the start for just over a year until I got fed up with my machine
locking up! The later versions may be better but I suggest trying the
machine without Seti@Home running for a while. See if it makes a difference.

Yes. Any idea why it behaves like that?

What's a heap?

Where will I find it/ what's the app file called?

I've seen several people say it is; and no one- leastways, no one worth
listening to - say otherwise.

I've been running it for some time, and have only had the problems
relatively recently; I don't think there's a direct connection.

You could try the MemTurbo (30 day trial) from
http://www.memturbo.com/
This little prog claims (and seems to) free up memory quite well. You
can set it to kick in when things get too low.

Also MS Technet had some patches for win95 memory leaks, associated
with windows sockets
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q141/2/11.asp?FR=0
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q148/3/36.asp
are two that I know of. There may well be others for win98 etc?.

I've used FreeMem Standard 4.3 <http://www.meikel.com/freemem> (which is
freeware) before, but been told that such tools don't really work. Do
they? How?

I have removed Zone Alarm, but still get the "WRQNAM" error when I try
to do a shutdown or restart.
