Catching incoming voice calls while online

I'm told that there is software - some of it free - which monitors a
phone line, during a @Net connection, - for incoming voce calls.

How does this work; can anyone recommend some, and where can I get it?

Tho when V.92 comes available later this year, it will provide this
service allowing you to "suspend" your net connection to take the call.
You will need to buy a new modem however.

What will the up/down speeds be for v.92?

I believe BT do a service whereby, when online, you can have voice
calls redirected to a voice mailbox with them, which can either record
an incoming message (like any other voicemail), or can email you a
binary of the message, or can initiate a voice audio stream to your PC
(I think two-way). Someone in uk.telecom will no doubt know for sure,
if you can't find any more information.

You can choose to a certain extent I believe. You can trade off
downstream for upstream. I think the default (theoretically) with v.92
is 42k up and 56k down, compared to v.90 which is 33.6k up, 56k down.

Not software, but I have a box called the Internet Alert 510. This sits
between the phone line and modem and detects the call waiting tone. When it
detects it, the box beeps, and you can pick up a phone (also connected to
the box) which disconnects the modem and connects the incoming call to the
phone line.

Cost me about 30 quid from http://www.ctl-bolton.com. You also need to pay
BT for call waiting obviously.

No connection with them btw, other than as a satisfied customer.

Another solution is to have call divert operating, and divert to a mobile
phone while the line is engaged.
