Several of my friends and I have the advantage of free cable - cable
telephone calls in the evening, and have cameras like the Logitech Quick
Cam recently offered by Demon. We can use NetMeeting or similar, but is
there any software - freeware, preferably - which will allow us to video
conference over a direct phone call?

I'm not sure I follow this. You say you can use Netmeeting, but then
ask for some software? Perhaps you aren't aware that Netmeeting
does not require a server run by an ISP to work?
The main problem is that Netmeeting, and all such similar H.323
pieces of software available cheaply, don't allow you to have
*simultaneous* video conferencing for more than two people. But
as you are dialed to a particular person I doubt this matters.
Regards,
Harry.

I wasn't; thanks.
How does one use it for direct- dialled calls?

I'm a bit rusty as to the actual layout these days, and I'm probably
several versions out, but, IIRC there was an option to connect to a
specific machine available.
So once you get TCP/IP running between the two machines, just connect.

Harry.

Search for H.324 compliant videoconferencing systems. Some are PC based. They should also support Netmeeting point to point. -- -- -- Stephen Maudsley, Esgem Limited - www.esgem.com -- Voice: +44 1453 521626 Fax: +44 1453 521957 -- Mobile: +44 370 810991 Stephen.Maudsley@esgem.com

It is possible to use NetMeeting to connect two computers without using an internet connection. You can download a paper that explains how to do this at http://noeld.com/download.htm . For connections using the internet (to avoid the cost of international calling) I recommend Visitalk.com. Currently they are giving away a headset/mic, to anyone registering for their free services (sorry, they will ship in US only). If you refer 6 people to Visitalk, you get $40 credit at buy.com. Each 6 referrals brings $40 more up to $200. Good luck, Les Thomas In article <7GxGgyAR0Wl4EwWB@pigsonthewing.demon.co.uk>, Andy Mabbett <andy@pigsonthewing.demon.co.uk> wrote: > Several of my friends and I have the advantage of free cable - cable > telephone calls in the evening, and have cameras like the Logitech Quick > Cam recently offered by Demon.
