Uninstall IE5

When IE5 was first released I downloaded it from the web.

PC Pro provided the full version on their June 1999 cover disc; when I
tried to install the full version there was a message about the original
version of IE5 having the uninstall function disabled (news to me).

I eventually had problems with IE5 and uninstalled it using Add/Remove
from the Control Panel - now when I try to install the version from the
cover disc the PC gives me the above message I click on OK, accept the
licence agreement and then I get the message -

Setup was unable to install all the components.

Please close all applications and try running Setup again.

I follow the advice but still get this message.

I am having to use Netscape at the moment which is fine, except, I can
only access my bank account on the web using IE.

Any suggestions as to how to get IE (in any version) back would be
appreciated.

You might have luck with a copy of infernal explorer 4 or 3. It might
say there is a newer version of ie present, but force your will on
windohs. :)

There are a few files in the windows/system folder you can delete or rename
to get the install going . Can't remember all of them but three I think are
Wininet.dll, Shlwapi.dll and Wintrust.dll.

Good luck.

Dane

Hi Dane

I have tried to remove/move these files but, because they are in use,
I'm not allowed to - thanks anyway.

I'm considering formatting my hard drive and starting from scratch.

Stuart

Same thing happened to me a few months ago including the 'Setup was
unable to install components......' warning. I did eventually get the
damn thing unistalled but not without a lot of help from the Microsoft
Knowledge base (sic!). It seems that manual uninstall is perhaps the
only option you may have - it certainly was for me.

Two pages to have a look at are:-

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q189/6/79.asp

(For information about the warning you (and I) received and the reasons
behind it)

and

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q217/3/44.asp

(for the complete manual uninstall instructions.

You will have to make some Registry changes so take a LOT of care. BTW I
have read somewhere that formatting the hard-drive may not always
provide a solution.

starting up in command prompt and using the old cd and del commands is usually
a lot less drastic than a reformat (-:!

Thanks Bill, I'll look at those pages first.

Thanks to everyone who answered my original post - I now have a fully
working copy of IE5.

If anyone is interested I removed the three dll files from
Windows/System and this allowed me to reinstall IE5.
