Hi I recently hgot a W98 2nd edition update CD from Microsoft. It didn't complete the installation properly, and now I have a machine that seems unstable at times, eg I have to de-install and re-install DUN every few days. I have tried re-installing the original W98 but it sees the later version and won't re-install. I have tried to re-install the update but it says it can't find the first edition files required. I really don't want to have to go back to the original 95 installation and start again, any suggestions? I took the option to back up the original Win98, thinking I could always go back. However, it didn't complete installing, and it would neither re-install on top of this nor go back to the original. A quick peek with Partition Magic showed me that the FAT had somehow become corrupted during the whole process and was not repairable. I ended up reformatting, reinstalling Win98 1st ed., reinstalling applications and data from backup, then installing 2nd edition successfully this time. It did mean that it removed all traces of accumulated "rubbish" from the hard disk, the debris of installing and removing magazine freebies, etc., but it took a couple of days on and off and I would have much preferred not to do it. This is cold comfort for you, I guess. I hope you don't have to go down this route. If your Windows 98 1st ed. is an "update" disk, you won't have to re- install 95 first, but you will have to present it with your 95 disk as proof of ownership. Regards, -- Colin Price

There is no real sollution, except the one below to this problem, over
time, no matter how carefull you are all BillyShit workstations in
normal use get corrupted, the more you install, deinstall etc the
quicker it bites.
On my multi-OS Thinkpad this is often, as I install and remove clients
software and generally use it to debug their problems. I have tried
all sorts of solutions and now for me there is only one.
Now each time I have to reinstall on this box, which has 14 partitions
mostly around 500Mb I install all the base software, applications
software and tools I normally use, and the drivers for everything
until I have a perfect copy.
One of the partitions is normally kept empty for nefarious and various
purposes, I then use GHOST to copy the newly installed partition to
the empty one. 400Mb GHOSTed to the same drive on a slow Thinkpad drive
takes 11 minutes with maximum compression and shrinks to around 180Mb,
this copy is parked to my big machine and written to CDR.
GHOST runs of a DOS boot disk so when a partition gets corrupted the
CD .img file is copied back to the empty partition from the CD, I
can't GHOST from a CD, I really must RTFM, and is then GHOSTed back
over the corrupt partition, This partition can be DOS, VFAT, HPFS,
NTFS GHOST doesn't care and I am back with a fresh system in about 9
minutes.
GHOST is available from the likes of Simply for around 15UKP, over the
past few months I have done all my OS's except Linux which GHOST can't
see on my machine. It is nice to feel safe when messing with the box.

Many thanks for this. Sounds like a good idea. Did a quick web search.
There's useful information at http://www.ghostsoft.com/ and it's
downloadable for 63USD. It is listed in Simply's current catalogue for
37.60 GBP inc. VAT, which is marginally cheaper, and I guess there's a
chance of getting a real manual. Maybe someone does it cheaper, but I
haven't looked yet.
Sounds like I need to send a note up the virtual chimney to Santa for
this (not too early to think of Christmas, I hope)! :-)

Apparently you CAN restore from a GHOST image off CD onto HD.

I use GHOST to clone from one HD to another - it identifies all
Billy$shit systems (but the volume names are read under DOS)
and can clone onto drives of different size - it looks like it's doing a
v.fast xcopy between the two.
Also, the version of GHOST I use identifies SCO but not Solaris,
Linux or Unixware - but can still clone them onto disks of identical
size (best to use identical types - manufacturer, size etc).
However, last week my new assistant cloned a Solaris disk off a
Conner850MB onto a Quantum1.6Gb and it worked perfectly -
looks like if two things match between the disks (cylinders,
number of heads, not sure yet) then cloning is possible.
It's also possible to dump these images to a server and restore
across a network - I've used IPX under DOS to map a drive to a
Netware3.12 server, and then used:
ghost -mode=dump, src=1,dst=G:\IMAGES\NEWFILE.IMG -sure
(or something along those lines). At the moment, I'm
experimenting with a laptop to see if I can dump a ghost image of
a clean install to a backup server, so I can restore it quickly over a
self-contained LAN after one of the sales bods has buggered
about with it off-site. still having problems with the sodding
PCMCIA network card... grrrr!! Anyhow - this idea may be of use to
you, {R}, instead of trying to restore off CD...?

It's certainly not present here. <snip rest of message> demon.tech.pc added back again - not sure why you removed it from the follow-ups.
