A couple of times lately, while running Scandisc overnight, I've been
told "Windows has had to restart 10 times because another programme is
using this drive" (I paraphrase). I've even tried closing down
everything in sight (via CTRL- ALT- DEL).
What can I do?

Hi, I've only just picked up on this thread, so if what I say has already been said then I apologise in advance. Do you have an icon in Control Panel called Fast Find? It comes with Office, Word etc. If so disable it. Fast Find keeps a log of your files and keeps monitoring the hard drives. This cured the same problem I used to have with Scandisk. -- Tony Bolton

I've even tried closing down >everything in sight (via CTRL- ALT- DEL). > >What can I do? Hi Andy, FWIW, a standard ScanDisk check (which I assume you are NOT running) should take very roughly 15 secs per gigabyte. A thorough check WITHOUT write checking should take very roughly 4-5 minutes per gigabyte. A thorough check WITH write checking should take very roughly 9 minutes per gigabyte. All these are ballpark figures and apply if you have prevented interruptions, and the screensaver does not kick in. Since you're running ScanDisk overnight, I assume you are running it with: Type of test: "Thorough" radio button - checked Options: Do not perform write testing - UNchecked and on a large (greater than 2-3 Gbyte) drive (otherwise why leave it overnight?). Since you don't run a screensaver, if you have closed all processes revealed in the Ctrl-Alt-Del scan except Explorer and Systray, you have now eliminated all the more common causes of this problem and there is NO point consulting the relevant MS Knowledge base article (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q222/4/69.ASP) mentioned here merely for other interested parties. Your problem WILL BE due to a background process accessing the drive and causing ScanDisk to restart. Processes need not reveal themselves to the Ctrl-Alt-Del scan, so other things to consider in no particular order are: 1) Are you running System Agent and scheduling a conflicting disk task? 2) Are you running an on-access background virus checker? This will cause disk activity, and prevent Scandisk completing. 3) Do you have a virus? Unlikely, but you can download a free scanner, eg F-PROT from http://www.complex.is/ 4) Is it possible that there is some event sound that is triggering during this process? This will certainly cause disk activity, and there is a chance this may interfere with Scandisk. 5) Other processes may be launched from registry keys at bootup, (Use Regedit.exe) and the keys to check are: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run 6) Another launch point is WIN.INI file, section [windows] load= 7) Another launch point is Autoexec.bat, check for non-standard programs loading: 8) Yet another launch point is the folder: C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp\ - check what is starting from there. 9) The only remaining launch point I am aware of is reached by directly altering the internal strings hardcoded in file IO.SYS at or around offset A40Dhex (Win95 OSR2 value). Do you have a hacker in the area? 10) Is the machine connected to a network where another user may be triggering disk activity? Failing any of these, I imagine you're running SETIathome, and you've got one (I expect they'd like to know at: http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/). I hope this helps. William

There's a very nice little tool called TaskInfo (maybe TaskInfo98 now: he
went shareware on the last release or so). I think it's grabbable from
www.winfiles.com
Essentially the same as the WinNT task-manager thingy: lets you see and kill
individual processes, a *lot* better than the standard ctrl-alt-delete menu
Try using that and see what's hidden in the background.

I have had this problem quite often. Using Startup Manager to
eliminate everything possible helps. (Btw, I thought that Scandisk
was supposed to deactivate the screensaver?).
But the best (though not free) solution is to run Norton Disk
Doctor instead. It is a good deal faster than Scandisk, does not seem
to get restarted so often, hustles through the restarts quickly, and
does not seem to have a maximum-restarts count set. So it always
completes, unless there os a complete disk-hang.
(You can often find outdated versions of Norton Utilities at
cut-price. W95 version 2 is fine.)

I've had this problem. Also running defrag .. it never gets past the initial disk check. All you need to do is boot into safe mode. Press F8 as the "starting windows" message appears in the top left hand corner of the screen and choose to boot into safe mode. You'll find you can then run scandisk and defrag without any problems. I had this problem. Someone on this group advised me to run Scandisk under Dos from the Dos prompt using the command C:\Dos\Scandisk/all. It worked a treat, and I experience no problems with this as the solution. Ok, the other thing I also tend to do (and this is because I run defrag immediately after Scandisk) is to turn of the virtual memory, restart and then Ctrl-Alt Del and end task on everything except Explorer and Systray. I find this not only speeds things up but also allows defrag to work on the hard drive without having to work around the protected areas. The DOS version of scandisk may corrupt long file names.
Better to restart in "MS-DOS" mode then run
C:\Windows\Command\Scandisk /all /custom
/all - checks all partitions
/custom - takes default settings from scandisk.ini, usually this
is set so that scandisk only asks questions if it
encounters a problem.

Right-click "My Computer", select Properties, then the "Performance" tab. In the "Advanced Settings..." box, click the "Virtual Memory..." button. The VM can be turned off by selecting "Let me manage my own memory settings" and then the appropriate option. Afterwards, you can either let Windows retake control, or setup one yourself to give better performance and no fragmentation of the swapfile. Set the maximum and minimum to the same value, which should be around 1.5x to 2.5x the amount of physical memory you have installed, given enough space on your HDD. Of course, if you do lots of memory intensive work (eg big graphics manipulation), increase this to more. I have 64MB of RAM and about 100MB of swapfile, which is IMO fine for normal use (games, word-processing, surfing etc.) Mark.. -- Clean, optimized, thoughtfully written code can really set an application apart from its peers. To turn off the virtual memory:- Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel Click on System, then click the Performance tab, then click in Virtual memory button. Click on radio button marked Let me specify my own settings. Then the boxes below should become un greyed, set the min and max to zero. Ok, back out and ignore the dire warnings! Using Control Panel/System, but don't do that, it's not the problem. As someone else remarked you have no problem running scandisk in DOS 7 (either boot to command prompt or single MS-DOS mode), unless you run the old version left behind in your DOS 6.2 or earlier directory - which will potentially screw your LFNs. However that is not the point. The thing should run under Windows. It doesn't work because Task Scheduler/System Agent insist on writing stuff to its log while the scan is running. This only affects larger disks where the scan takes a long time. Your options are - to launch scandisk from a program that pauses Task Scheduler/System Agent (that you may have to write, as I did) - to use a different scheduler 9if there is one that doesn't have this problem - to launch scandisk manually after pausing Task Scheduler/System Agent. Or if you aren't using Task Scheduler/System Agent, post a list of the processes running at the time (you'll need a proper task manager such as PrcView http://www.teamcti.com/pview, which shows processes that have registered as services and comes with a command line tool as well). -- Dirk Fieldhouse Logica UK Limited fieldhouse@logica.com 75 Hampstead Road c=gb;a=attmail;p=logica; London NW1 2PL o=LOGICA;ou1=UK;s=fieldhouse UK +44 (20) 7637 9111
