Windows Update, ie5 update, etc.

I am using ie5, whose 'About' tells me it is:
Version: 5.00.2014.0216
Update Versions:;3725;
When I use tools -> Windows Update, it tells me:
You have an older version of Internet Explorer 5 and Internet
Tools. If you would like to download additional components from
the Windows Update catalog (sic), you must first upgrade to the
latest version
If I say yes to the update, I then download a 470K file, ie5setup.exe,
which (so long as I am on-line) runs a procedure to download 15Mb of ie5
upgrade - seemingly, the whole ie5 package again (there are configurable
options for extra fonts, etc, and it doesn't seem to recognise which, if
any, of these I already have). Indeed, it seems no different to the
first time I downloaded ie5. It is here that I cancelled the update!
What I want to know is, can I simply upgrade using a version of ie5 for
a magazine cover disc? How will I know I have the latest version?
Is there a web site where I can download the 15Mb of files without using
the update application, so I can do it using a different, leased line,
account, and save my phone bill? What if I had two or more machines I
wanted to update?
Why can't I simply download a "patch" which will do the necessary
updates - and what are these updates?
I don't want to start another MS is shite/ brilliant war, but what
possible advantages are there for them in steering us towards working in
this way?
Short of running windows update every week or so, is there a way to be
kept up- to- date with such changes (for Windows and ie5)? Perhaps a
mailing list, or an 'announce' newsgroup?
(cross- posted; should I have asked this elsewhere?)

What if I had two or more machines I > wanted to update? Those updater programs are really annoying. Quicktime 4 does it, but with that I found that after downloading everything, before it installs you search you hard disk for a 7 meg file, and that is the downloaded data. Next time you need to install QT4, you just run the installer program in the same dir as the quicktime data cache. Sorry I havent answered you question, I was just having a small rant :) Oh yeh, the leased line are good. I am at uni, so any file more than a few meg get done in 20 secs, and brought home on my zip drive :) And costs nothing! -- Nick Remove .SPANKYSPAM from my email address to reply......

And simply do an install over my existing ie5? Will that work, and
preserve all my settings?
How will I know I've got the latest version?

Well, an earlier version won't install over a later version, so you'll not go backwards. But _latest_? Make a permanent copy of the version you intend to use (eg burn a CD). Wait two days, maximum. A later version _will_ appear. Mark.. -- Clean, optimized, thoughtfully written code can really set an application apart from its peers. [] Few software companies like the "patch" update process these days; it isn't just Microsoft (Turnpike, a British company [actually part of Demon, but independent of it] insist on a complete download too). One reason sometimes given is that a wide number of patches are needed to cover various different versions that might be out there. (I don't buy this as one could always just use lots of incremental patches, doing a complete downoad if one got so far behind that the total size of the patches exceeded that of a download, but whatever.) -- (Amend return address when replying.) -- J. How will I know I have the latest version? You could get hold of the IE5 admin kit, its free from the MS site. Then you can tailor IE5 to your own specs. It has a version checker built in too. My copy of the IE5 installation has a file called Ie5sites.dat this contains a url list of the IE5 mirrors. One is Demon and there are 3 others in the UK.... Try http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie5/download/rtw/x86/ie5sites.dat ftp.cix.co.uk/mirrors/tucows.com/DOWNLOAD/win32/ie5sites.dat seems to have a lot. One way is to use one of those web page updated auto-informer sites. Tie in the ie5 cab file into it from your fav. http site and any time the cab file time stamp is changed you are emailed? Then download the cab into your active setup directory, which is in your root and overwrite it? Your registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\InstallInfo contains where it looks for the updated cabs. You could change this to point to a folder on your harddrive containing the cabs? -- Stuart Halliday Acorn Cybervillage http://acorn.cybervillage.co.uk/
