I had the same problem a while ago, and it got me going mad for a while
until I remembered I was using "SpellCatcher" as a spell checker. One of
the options in Spell Catcher (an excellent programme) is to correct
automatically double spaces (a common typographical error). This options
means that in MacSoup only the first space will register. It should also
work if you type any letter (not just the down arrow) between spaces.

I do not know if you use Spell Catcher, or if any other similar
programme might be the problem but it might be worth checking along
these lines.

If none of the above is relevant, you might want to post more details of
your setup and possible use the comp.sys.mac.comm group to post your
question (with MacSoup in the subject line) and Stefan Haller might come
up with an answer.
