All Macs can talk to stuff on their serial ports at 230400 bit/s (except
for the iMac, of course): it's the speed LocalTalk runs at. That's
*ALL* of them with no exceptions from the 128K original onwards. I was
referring to all of them, not just all new ones. With the right
software, even a 128K Mac can use a serial port at about 500,000 bit/s
(yes, that's right; the data comes from Apple). Any Mac without at
68000 (or the iMac) can use a serial port at 920000 bit/s; some
PowerMacs can go up to 2Mbit/s. (this is using an external clock; the
internal serial port clock can only run the port at up to 230400 bit/s)
The thing is that 68000 Macs (for example) can't run a reliable TCP/IP
PPP internet connection and an internet application using a serial port
speed of above 28800 bit/s. LCIIIs can do the job with a serial port
speed of 115200 bit/s (dunno about 230400 bit/s). Macs in between are
in between (aside from the blinding IIfx which is quicker than the LCIII
with more efficient serial ports).
The full story is rather long...
Rowland.
