Demon's attitude is entirly sensible IMHO. I want no third parties
deciding what mail addressed to this domain does or does not reach
this domain.

And if Demon offered any kind of ISP-level filtering, even if the
customer had to request it and sign the agreement in blood, the
whinging ofy the first customer to find an important email had been
bounced by the filters would be deafening (even if said filter
was doing what they had asked it to do). And 10 to 1 they'd blame
Demon for not warning them that asking for mail to be bounced
means mail may get bounced.

Use POP3's TOP command to get the mail headers, then decide which
messages you want to download in full and which to delete from the
server unread.

As an alternative, remember that while you can not control who sends
you mail, you can control who you receive mail for. Setting a From:
that bounces and a Reply To: that doesn't means we've only recieved
two items of UCE in 10 months (one to a Reply To: and one to an
address used only on a small circulation mailing list which the
UCEr had targetted. To be fair the UCE was almost connected with
the purpose of the list, but UCE is UCE so larted them anyway).
