Steve West has been an occasional poster to ed.general & UK Mac groups
for a while. His company's offices were directly above the Gilded
Balloon venue, which yesterday became the seat of the biggest fire to
hit the Edinburgh city centre for about 20 years; it was still burning
this afternoon. If I saw things correctly through the smoke from the
cordon a block away at the top of Blair Street, I was watching the
burned-out shell of The Graphics Company's office being deluged with
water from two snorkels at once. Because of its location and the scale
of the damage, it looks like they'll have to knock the building down at
once, with the entire contents being a write-off.

Steve, are you okay?

Did you manage to save anything? - a graphic design firm must be about
the most fire-vulnerable line of business there is.

Anything we can do to help?
