Flaky logons to demon/freeserve with iMac

Hi all, more help required...

I'm getting increasingly frustrated by very common "Authentication
failed" or "the remote side is not respondind correctly" whilst
attempting logon to Demon (0845 079 8666) and freeserve at v90. No
problems at 33.6 on 0845 02120666 or 3535666. Since it happens with
demon & freeserve I'm inclined to blame something in my iMac, 8.5.1,
Remote Access, all iMac & modem updaters installed. Any ideas? I thought
about trying freeppp as an alternative...whaddya allthink?

Cheers!

Jerome

I think it has something to do with the V90 implementation of the iMac
internal not liking something about your local phone line- or the V90
implementation in Ascends used by Freeserve and Demon. Or a combination of
those factors.

Try changing one of the variables by using the Demon Green Romp, 0845 212
0666, which uses 3Com Network Access Servers (NASs), instead of Ascends. It
might work for you, or it might not.

I was also suspicious when I set up my neighbur's new (Rev B) iMac....
Couldn't connect to Netcom at better than 28.8. Then we brought his iMac
into my house to connect to my phone line and instantly/repeatedly got
46.6. Turns out his line is DACS'd and that kills v90 stone dead. Since
noone is using the other half of his line, he asked BT to remove the DACS
-- but they are most reluctant to do so since they don't have any spare
capacity in our little hamlet.

Thanks Peter, but already tried this and all I can get on this number is
31200-ish. Ho hum.

Thanks...definitely not a DACS problem though, I may have to
investigate the quality of the copper to the street...

What's this DACS lark?

Rowland.

Putting two phone lines down one physical copper pair. It's done (if I
remember right) by digitising and multiplexing the signals. It works fine
for voice and fax (which is all BT is contracted to provide) but it is
death on comms above 28,800bps. But because it saves BT having to install
an extra pair, it is becoming quite common.

Someone else will have to provide the technical lowdown but it's a commonly
used BT device to split a single telephone line into two lower-bandwidth
lines to save them the cost of installing new poles to meet demand for new
lines. These are usually ok for voice but not for data.

where the phone company uses one phone cable to put two different phone
lines on. ie/ they use a box of tricks to divide the bandwidth by two
and double thier capacity. apparently no noticeable difference for
speach, but of course, evident when using a modem.

Digital Access Carrier System, a device which compresses 2 "lines" down
a single copper pair and subsequently screws both lines for data.

Gotcha - thanks for all the replies.
