MacSoup & window switching.

Hi All,

I've just got an iMac, and going by the views I've read here whilst
lurking, MacSoup seems like a good newsreader to start with. I've just
escaped from Win95, where I've been using Agent for News & email, an
undeniably good piece of software for fast browsing of news.

Things I miss, though, can I acheive them with MacSoup or any other
reader? Newswatcher doesn't seem to do any of this either.

1. The ability to read the next new message in a group (chronologically)
by hitting one key. Agent did this, and switched threads & groups
automatically when everything was read.

2. Are there any 3rd party programs available that will switch the
active window based on where you've parked the mouse? It would save 1
click every time I want to select a new subject, or thread, in Macsoup.

As you can see, I'm a lazy chap who wants to use the mouse as little as
possible in a news/email sesssion. Anyhow, another thing I used to like
was threading in email, as I subscribe to three lists. What's generally
the most loved email app? I quite like using the newreader's one for
convenience, but MacSoups' doesn't appear to support attachments, or
threading.

Internet config also doesn't wany to save my signature file, it always
defaults back to that message about random signatures. Should I just
put my sig in a random signatures folder? (OS 8.5)

Oh, and how do I create an X-face? Can't find a program anywhere!
And where's the 'Del' key on the iMac???!!!!!!

Thanks all in advance.

Jerome

You have explicitly to save any changed config. That one has caught me
in the past, too.

You can do that for tagged messages by hitting the space bar (to read
each message until the end and then jump to the next tagged message) or
hitting the <enter> key (to jump to the next message without finishing
the current one). If your messages are not tagged (a black dot by the
side), you will have to do this manually. You can tag threads (or
sub-threads) automatically by hitting the plus (+) sign (use the minus
sign (-) to kill thread or subthread).
If you want to read all messages, hit Command-A and then the plus sign
to tag all messages.

I am not aware of one but by hitting the space bar, MacSoup will
automatically close the last message, if you hit it again, it will close
the current group window (if no messages are left in it) and if you hit
it a third time it will open the next group with new postings.

Sorry, I am not sure how to help there.

See other reply above.

There is a programme called Saving Face which helps you encode the
X-face from a bitmap image. I cannot remember where you can get it but a
quick search in Yahoo or Altavista for "Saving face" and "X-face" should
find it fairly quickly. Once you have the programme, just follow the
instructions.

Good luck with MacSoup and the Imac (a winning combination).

Regards,

Franck.

Thanks, but I've just popped the sig into that random folder now.
Did you get that email about x-faces? Still want to create one of them
bad boys!

Cheers

Franck, you are an absolute superstar. You have increased my news
reading speed, and decreased my mouse-button clicking, by about 1000%.
And now i'm off to fing saving face. Cheers A LOT!!! :-))

BTW, you can switch between the two frontmost windows in MacSOUP with
Command-"=".

And, you can navigate within a thread using the numeric keypad keys as
compass points.

Save the MacSoup message with the attachment in it as 'text' then just
drop in onto Stuffit Expander - voila, it seems to winkle out the
required code OK. At least it worked OK for me anyhow.

Yep - can't find the s/w to create 'em anymore. :-(

Someone here told me where to look, ISTR. Help!
