I've just tried swapping the LAN cable, but that did not fix either.

So now, I've used the excellent microsoft ERU utility and restored my
registry and all system files from 6 weeks ago (I do an ERU backup
monthly) and I'm back working now.

But I'm still puzzled as to what caused the problem; what the problem
really was ie what files were wrong and why all my attempts to fix did
not work and also why Norton registry checker did not fix either.

Contended, but not happy...but very confused.
