C++ - The Next Step Up!
=======================
Part 1: The Essentials of C++: Wednesdays, 11th Oct.- 20th Dec.,1995
Part 2: Advanced C++: Tuesdays, 16th Jan. - 26th Mar., 1996
And other courses in Computing Science
======================================
Who should attend?
If you are working as a software engineer, are involved in the design and
implementation of large software systems, and are not currently using either OOP
or C++ then theser courses are for you. By the end of Part 2 you will be
familiar
with the OO aspects of C++ and be able to use the language with confidence to
solve real problems.
Why OOP and C++?
Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) is set to overcome many of the problems
associated with designing and implementing large software systems. Although not
strictly an OOP language, C++ can be, and has been, used successfully to
write OO
programs. It supports Abstract Data Types (ADT), both single and multiple
inheritance, and dynamic binding. It is used widely in industry to solve real
problems and is available in many computing environments.
What is covered?
Part 1, The Essentials of C++ covers:
Types, Declarations, Expressions & Statements;
Functions, Operators & Classes;
Pointers & References;
Input & Output
Part 2, Advanced C++ covers:
Templates;
Polymorphism;
Inheritance;
Virtual Functions
We recommend that you take both courses if you are not familiar with C++.
When?
Following a highly succesful launch of the courses in 1994/5, we are able to
offer both Parts 1 and 2 during the academic year 1995/6.
Each course takes place on one evening a week from 6.00pm until 9.00pm over an
11-week period:
Part 1: Wednesdays, 11th Oct. - 20 Dec., 1995
Part 2: Tuesdays, 16th Jan. - 26th Mar., 1996
Both courses involve lectures and tutorials with hands-on experience.
Where?
All lectures and practicals take place on the main University Campus in the
Department of Computing Science, Claremont Tower, Claremont Road, Newcastle upon
Tyne. Claremont Tower is a short walk from the Haymarket Metro and bus stations,
and there is ample car-parking available in the vicinity of the University.
How Much?
Each course is competitively priced at 500 pounds per person for the full
11-week
course, inclusive of light refreshments, and all lecture notes and practical
materials. Block and Educational discounts are available. Please phone for
details.
Cancellations
Withdrawal from the course after booking will incur a charge of thirty
pounds and
those withdrawing within two weeks of the start date will be liable for the full
fee.
Substitutions may be made at any time.
The organisers reserve the right to cancel
the course should there be an insufficient number of applicants.
Other Courses in Computing Science
The research and teaching expertise of staff within the Department of Computing
Science is extensive and hence we can offer courses to industry in a wide
variety
of other areas. Particular areas of strength are
Dependability
Distributed Systems
Parallelism
Theoretical Computing Science
VLSI Design
In addition we plan to run a course on Using Information Network Services (the
Internet) during the 1995/6 academic year.
The content and format of corporate courses in these areas, including the
introductory and advanced courses in C++, can be tailored to a client¹s needs
using a variety of formats. For example, either of the C++ courses can be given
as intensive one-week programmes at a client¹s site on PCs, Apple Macs or UNIX
workstations.
If you are interested in courses in any of these areas please complete the form
at the end of this document and/or contact us to discuss your requirements.
The Department of Computing Science
Course lecturers and practical demonstrators are members of an
internationally-recognised centre of expertise in computer science, and have
experience of working with a wide variety of hardware and software platforms.
The Department has consistently been awarded the highest grade for its research
in selectivity exercises conducted on behalf of the UK Universities Funding
Council. The Department attracts around £1.5 million per annum in external
research funding and is proud of its strong links with local industries.
The Department is also fully committed to maintaining its high standards of
teaching and the strength of its research profile is reflected in the quality of
the courses on offer both to its students and to industry.
Details of the Department, including research activities, can be found on
