09 April 2005 Mining leading rural economy as drought lingers - Gerard Callinan Over the past few weeks we've heard a lot about two issues here on the Country Hour. One: the lingering drought. Two: the boom in the mining sector. This morning a further chapter in that story was written with the opening of a copper mine at Hermidale in the central west of the state. It's an area that has, like many parts of the state, suffered through the current drought. Mayor of the Bogan Shire, Ray Donald, says the mine has already provided a significant boost to the local economy and has provided an option for farm workers to seek employment in a more stable industry. "As far as our small rural community is concerned battling this drought, its certainly a boost to our economy...real estate has certainly benefited from the mine, as has small business and the employment in town." Mining is helping a drought stricken community and giving it a boost. After all the rhetoric you've carried on with about mining companies and a drought..... duffo21
