Transfer of Currency between UK and Australia

I have given up on my Australian bank, and its fully owned subsidiary
bank in UK.

I had assumed (? wrongly) that associated banks would find it easy to
transfer currency between UK and Australia.

However, the UK Bank will not accept faxes, except where I take the
full responsibility for any errors, including theirs - and my past
experience with them does not impress me on that score!

Using letters posted by Express Air Mail, and also filling in their
own documents which are supposed to speed the transaction, it takes a
minimum of 10 days, and often as much as two weeks, to effect a
transfer of funds.

There is also the matter of the uncertainty with regard to the actual
exchange rate used for the transaction, as the decision has to be made
several days before thetransfer, and the exchange rate can change
appreciably over that period.

Does anyone have any experience of a better, more certain method of
arranging currency transfers between UK and Australia, where I could
expect an immediate (i.e. within 24 hours) response to my requests?

If you bring it in as capital you don't have to pay tax eg a loan from your
unit trust or company to you then interest is payed back to the unit trust
or company.

I have seen a VISA card used

But it may not suit your situation

Forget it!!

Australian banks are crap and they are crap because we inherited our banking
systems from the British.

Been there, done that, given up...

Ed,
While working in Saudi I regularly and reliably transferred funds to
Westpac in Australia via telegraphic transfer from my Saudi bank
account. The Saudi bank was a correspondent bank of Westpac. The
exchange rate was that prevailing on the day I made the telegraphic
transfer.

Do you want to have the remittance made within 24 hours, or it received
by the beneficiary within 24 hrs?

See http://www.foreignborn.com/self-help/sending_money_abroad.htm - although
targetted at UK / US I believe that all methods described would also apply
to UK / AUS.
