Competition Results
Last month we asked you to send in ideas for new services that could be
provided by Shareware Music Machine with the prize for the best idea
being an account on www.audioplayer.com worth $120.
Here is the winning idea sent in by Stephen Brown...
Sample-net of unusual sounds in wav format{or"*"?}, a big library with
selections of different sounds, ie; animal-noises, vehicles, break-
beats, bass-lines, instruments, film-clips and vocals. Then you could
have an `online-mixer-sound-generator`,to manipulate the sounds and
save in the format you desire.
There were so many brilliant ideas that we have also awarded several
'runners up' with small trial account on audioplayer.com -
Fene Elened - a java application that lets users create music online
August Smith - an idea for a web based record label
Roy Suter - monthly software forums conducted in real-time
John Fleming - a midifile collection service
Martha Seward - a search engine to locate LPs and CDs
Scott Hall - a showcase of music being made with SMM software
These ideas are so good that we have already begun a program to implement
most of them and we will announce the new services as they are ready.
Sorry to all those who didn't win a prize - the quality and volume of
entries was much higher than we expected and there just weren't enough
prizes for all the deserving entries.
All winners will receive their prizes by the end of this week.

n-Track Studio is a multitrack recorder for Windows 95/98/NT. It lets
you record, overdub, mix wave and MIDI tracks. All you need is a full-
duplex sound card (i.e. capable of simultaneous recording and playback)
or two or more soundcards and some free space on your hard disk to store
audio data. Simultaneous recording from multiple soundcards is also
supported. Various wave files formats are supported and mono & stereo
tracks are can coexist in the same song.
Real-time audio effects can be applied non-destructively to each track,
allowing you to listen immediately to the result of a change in the
parameters of an effect: 25 combinations of effects per track are
allowed. Current effects include echo, chorus, compression. Third party
standard DirectX audio plug-ins can be used from inside the program.
Basic wave editing operations can be performed from within the program.
MIDI tracks can be imported end exported to regular MIDI files. All the
audio tracks are saved as standard wave files and mixed "on the fly"
during playback. Volume and pan evolution can be programmed by drawing
it on the timeline window. When all the tracks have been recorded and
all the settings are correct, it's possible to "render" all the tracks
to a single wave file, to store the song and for eventually recording it
to a compact disk using a CD-R.

info and queries the CDDB database for info on the current CD (for cdir,
