You don't ever have to apologise for being honest! Thanks for you reply.

I still can't find my stored copy of 10quid's terms, but I did find my
stored copy from 20th November 1999 of bargaindomains and cyberstrider
websites. Using a very useful URL supplied privately (thanks), I found
the following:

http://web.archive.org/web/20001027045639/www.bargaindomains.co.uk/faq.h
tm

"Do you charge for transferring my domain name to another provider.?
Quite simply..No. BargainDomains will not make a charge.
Top"

http://web.archive.org/web/20010304012909/www.bargaindomains.co.uk/terms
.htm

"1.2 If BargainDomains does not receive payment for the domain or any
associated services (registration, transfer in, transfer out),"

The point is that this is contradictory, and maybe there was the same
contradiction on 10quid, whether on a faq or whatever, and that I was
justified in believing there was no transfer out charge. I should add
that I was an affiliate (never got beyond the threshold as the scheme
was suspended for a few weeks for a long time), so maybe I had a
different login and path to domain registration which showed different
Ts and Cs - or none at all. But then Molly was/is an affiliate as well,
I think, so I can't see how that would have done it.

I do have a genuine interest in finding out what was what, and how
whatever it was happened. If I did make a mistake, then not only did it
affect me but anyone who might have taken my foolish advice to use
10quid, as the 1 mb free webspace gave them search engine presence that
forwarding didn't. Only to find out that - totally unannounced - my
sites were actually put to portland.co.uk which I could have done myself
and register elsewhere (and did later with 2 domains at joker.com).

Thanks also to all the other polite and helpful posters. Apologies for
being slow to follow-up; I still can't type much in one sitting. You
should see the neglected state of my websites :(
