I have a problem with FTP uploads to a 1&1 server - which I believe
may be hosted in Germany.

I can connect Ok and downloads work fast (I have an EasyNet ADSL 1MB
link) but uploads grind to a halt and time out on large files. Small
files generally get through OK.

I have tried passive and non-passive modes, 3 different FTP clients
and even used the web based FTP portal http://www.freewebftp.com and
nothing works via my EasyNet ADSL connection. Yet I can successfully
FTP upload to any one of half a dozen other web servers which I run
sites on (unix and NT).

Curiously, a colleague can FTP upload fast and without problems from
his TeleWest Cable Modem connection, but when he tried the
http://www.freewebftp.com service, that failed also. I am guessing
that this web service uses HTTP to transfer the upload to an
intermediate FTP server somewhere else so this is not the same as a
direct FTP from a PC.

My suspicion is that the upload bandwidth available is variable,
depending on where the FTP connection is 'via', but 1&1 say they have
tested it and have seen no problems.

I'm stumped - any suggestions what/where the problem may be and how to
resolve this?
