From a recent Council report: 1 To advise the Executive of the results and effects of a recent load capacity assessment of Milton Road Railway Bridge which carries the A199 Milton Road over the Portobello Junction to Niddrie South Junction and Niddrie West Junction railway lines. [ snip ] 3 The railway line below is used primarily by ScotRail and forms part of the Council's CrossRail scheme to and from Newcraighall which was introduced in June 2002. The two tracks operate as individual bi-directional single tracks with the half hourly CrossRail service utilising the easternmost line. The west side line forms part of the South Suburban line which is much less heavily trafficked at this location, however it does carry one northbound passenger train each week. A temporary propping solution allowing unrestricted road vehicle passage is therefore not feasible. [ snip ] So, what is the one northbound passenger train each week?

Looking at my Edinburgh street map it can only be from Leith Docks or perhaps something from Baileyfield Depot, all movements from these places would be routed round the sub to get over the Forth Bridge. All other traffic can route through Millerhill onto the sub or just go through the Waverley. I have to think if this train exists it is indeed a freight train and not passenger! However, 10 years or so ago, there was major signalling rewiring work at Haymarket and all services on the Shotts line that came in through Slateford was routed round the sub to the Waverley. Perhaps there is some sort of weekly maintenance work that results in the first service on a Sunday being re-routed? I think I may have to ask my contacts at the Edinburgh Signalling Centre about this mystery train!?! -- !Speedy Gonzales! to reply, remove the 'OBVIOUS'

During the summer timetable there was a Sunday only Glasgow Central - Bournemouth service that used the 'sub' from Slateford Junction to Niddrie North Junction. > I'm guessing that either a train swaps to the western track north of > Brunstane (if there is a crossover?) There's no connection between the two lines that run parallel through Brunstane except at Niddrie North Junction.
