Hi Nick, all, We've just come inside at about 5 to 8 after seeing the best show we've ever had here 10 miles SSW of York. It started at about 7:10pm with a bright green arc at about 10 degrees spanning the Northern sky, and deep reds above the arch up to 40 plus degrees. From time to time the reds developed rays and brighter patches. The green arch gradually rose higher over the next 10 minutes until it was at about 25 degrees and the reds were still above it and much deeper. Then all hell broke loose :-). Red and green rays and patches forming, growing, brightening, and fading within 30 or 60 seconds, the Green arcs came up to Polaris and split and moved as we watched. Lumps appeared in the east and grew in long lines to the west. At one point we had a double arch and lots of red rays. This high activity level continued for about 10 minutes. It was fantastic . . . can you tell I was impressed :-). The whole family were out in the garden sitting on the trampoline wrapped in sleeping bags and blankets. The main activity seemed to drift off to the West and after 10 minutes of not much happening I came inside to check the net. I'll be out every 10 minutes of the rest of the night. Lovely clear night, and even the bright Moon didn't seem to hamper the observing. Just been up on t'moors west of Ripon, N Yorks. Nothing a spectacular as Paul reports (missed it), be a steady green arc in the north horizon. Briefly developed a green curtain for a while. -- steve

Many thanks for the early warning! But I'd been looking out at overcast all evening and was just off to bed when the cat wanted to go out. >From the door, the northern sky looked strangely misty with pale green uplighting. I thought at first that it was just more cloud. But then I noticed stars were visible through the "mist"! Luckily I'm not troubled by light pollution here. I must have missed the earlier highlights but was treated to a wide pale green illuminated arc across the low northern sky, perhaps up to 25 degrees at the high point slightly west of north. The upper edge seemed more intense than the body of the arc giving a fuzzy rainbow effect. Occasional soft pillars of the same pale light extended well up to Cassiopeia and the Pole Star. Though they were short lived. Then suddenly the west turned blood red and stayed that way for some minutes before fading. At 11.45 CET the arc was sinking and fading rapidly and I retreated to the warmth of my bed. Brilliant moonlight had made it easy to move around on the frosted field outside the garden to get a better view above the local trees. Though the moonlight must have reduced contrast. I wish it had been clear earlier. Chris.B
