"That's why we like you Mulder, your ideas are weirder than ours".

Delighted that delays on Demon newservers have ended.

Umm, whats wrong with having a one hour turnaround between posting and
retreiving? I only download news once a day so that hour isn't going
to be missed.

Prestel's (who use theplanet) newserver lets me click on post and when
I immediately download messages I get the one's I've just posted back.

Two hours ain't current. 30 seconds is current, which is what the pitifully poor
news server at my uni used to manage. A few minutes would be nice...

They haven't though.

Yeah, I'm still reading threads in UK.Politics that say that Margaret
Thatcher is Prime Minister.

When I said pitifully poor, I meant a machine that ran lots of other stuff as
well as news software, regularly had a full spool so you couldn't post to it,
lost its article database every few weeks... basically it was a mess. And it
still managed fairly decently when it was behaving.

Of course, as you say, it had nowhere near the load. But it had nowhere near the
capacity, so may have been running even more flat-out than Demon's one.

When did that happen?

I'm sure I voted for Pitt the Younger last time round.

What is it with this "I want to get my messages back" thing anyway? The
current arrangements here mean I get my postings to appear back in the
group *before* they even get sent to Demon.

No- I'm okay. My long runner was that man wouldn't land on the moon by
2000. I reckon I'm safe there.

That's not delay: that's flashback.

That sounds suspiciously like the one at B'ham Uni, who didn't have
anyone who knew how to get the spool expiring properly and hence it
sat, constipated on a pile of old articles, until apparently a big
batch hit it and it woke up. This led to posters at B'hams peers
firing binaries at it to wake it up ;-)

I could set things up to post straigt away, but I like them to go
through the server as sort of a feedback check on:

1) My software isn't Broken [tm]
2) The news server isn't Broken [tm]
3) My articles make sense within the framework of other posts to the
group at that time
4) I'm not Broken [tm]

Actually, forget #3
