My friend's son, Derrick McQuade, was chosen to be one of 40 California
high school boys to attend the All Stars England-California [american
syle] football games in Birmingham, England in March, 1999. He then has
the opportunity to join the ranks of all the high school football
players selected to be USA ALL-STARS. This is truly an honor to be
selected as one of the outstanding football players for the state of
California.

One problem is that the fees involved are not covered by the school (Los
Altos High School), or the event, and responsibility is left entirely on
the boy's family... who is solely supported by a single mom. Derrick
McQuade's a terrific kid, does a good job in school, he stays out of
trouble, and I've know him for years.

The cost to get him over there and participate is $2000, and my friend
doesn't have anywhere *near* that. I told her I would ask for fundraiser
or sponsorship ideas from these newsgroups. I'm not asking for money or
donations from anyone here... just ideas on how to raise money somehow
for this kid to get there for this exciting event.

Does anyone know how to approach a corporation to sponsor such an
endeavor? Any ideas to raise the funds for an individual like this?

We are ALL EARS and would appreciate any advice. The down payment is due
in a few weeks.

Thanks in advance (TIA TIA TIA),
Karen

Hrm... Maybe check with the local sports stores and see if they'd be willing
to contribute? Soccer world, Play It Again Sports, etc. Beyond that, hrm,
let's see. Does your friend's son belong to any organizations that he might
be able to ask to help sponsor him? Heck, maybe consider making a case to
the Los Altos School District, the City Of Los Altos, or the City of Los
Altos Chamber of Commerce for a "scholarship". Hell, maybe an elected
official or two would be willing to help. I mean, it /is/ an election year.
If he's really an All-American Kid (I don't doubt you, don't worry!), they
(any of the groups I mentioned) may be willing to pony up some money. If his
family is of "minority descent or nationality", perhaps one of those ethnic
community groups may be able to help.

I hope this works out for him. He sounds like a great kid, and this sounds
like a fantastic opportunity for him. Good luck, Karen!

When we needed some sponsorship for various activities (in the Scouts) we
approached medium sized and smaller local companies rather than large
conglomarates. Normally the promise of advertising can work wonders, we
managed to get a local engineering company to provide all the materials and
tools as well as the engineering know how to help us build a new Scout car.
A local printer said they would produce our news letter for nothing, etc etc.
I would reccomend this, you could say offer to put the company logo on all
the luggage and so on.
I don't know if this is practical, I live in the UK, but it may be worth a
try.
Good luck, and I hope he gets here.
