Hi all, I want to make a video, using my VHS video recorder in Australia, and send it to my Mum in England. In the past she has not been able to watch video tapes from Australia using a video player and TV in England. In Australia we have a PAL TV system. Is England's TV system different? She doesn't have a PC so I can't make a VCD. Could I send a mini DV tape over and get it converted to VHS in England? What would that cost? Thanks heaps for any help. -- Ben Thomas Current car: silver manual Holden Astra SRi Dream car: black Lamborghini Diablo If you find yourself struggling with loneliness, you're not alone. It's the reception and sound that are different between the countries. We both use PAL so there isn't a problem. Certainly tapes I get from the UK have no problem playing at at any time in Australia. As noted the broadcasting standards are different between the two countries. This means that when I took one of those mini battery operated TV sets to the UK it couldn't pick up British TV even though it managed to pick up somewhat fuzzy reception from Holland. An identical mini battery operated TV set set for "UK standards" received the UK broadcasts, but not the Dutch ones.

There should be no reason why recordings made on an Australian VHS machine do not play back correctly on a UK one. It would be a good idea to make recordings in SP rather than LP mode - as older VHS machines didn't support LP. The only other reasons, apart from LP/SP issues, that could be causing a problem is one machine being really out of alignment and not tracking properly, or possibly the recording getting zapped by X-Rays - though I have never heard of this actually happening... The PAL VHS format is identical in England and Australia and everywhere else that uses PAL, as anyone with imported UK VHS tapes will tell you right away. >In Australia we have a PAL TV system. Is England's TV system different? Only in terms of the actual broadcast. PAL videotapes are identical across all PAL territories. If you make her a PAL VHS tape, it *will* work in England, as long as your mum isn't trying to use an Australian VHS machine on a UK television via the RF output :-) - Anthony

I have numerous VHS tapes that I recorded in the UK - the sound is a little sibulant but they play fine on 3 VHS players I have used over here. Hi all, Thanks for all the helpful replies. At some time in the past mum copied a video from the camcorder to VHS and took it to England, using a Sharp short play VHS video recorder. It would not play in England. I will give it a shot and make sure I do it in short play mode. Thanks again. -- Ben Thomas Current car: silver manual Holden Astra SRi Dream car: black Lamborghini Diablo If you find yourself struggling with loneliness, you're not alone. And yet you are alone.
