Union Station is a great place and an example of what Sydney's Central could
be like, great shopping and great food. No one stopped my taking pics when I
was there last year.

Having been to Several Amtrak Stations myself they were al re -
furbished back in the ealy 1990's.
The Security Guard was caught of Guard when he didin't realise the CEO
was also standing by
when he was being interviewed.

Taking photographs of Railway Stations in the Former Soviet Union and
other Eastern Bloc countries
when they were under communism rule was also forbidden. If you were
caught taking photographs
your film was taken out of your camera and destroyed.

Even "post Soviet", it was frowned upon... I raised the eyebrows of
our Intourist guide in mid-1991 when I climbed the overbridge at
Ulan-Ude in the Buryat Republic, just east of Lake Baikal, to take a
pic of the "Rossiya"/Trans-Siberian.

It is still illegal in South Korea, for obvious reasons.

Re the USA; There has been significant comment in "Trains" mag over
the last few months where over-zealous cops and security guards have
claimed that people taking photos of trains and railway infrastructure
from public areas (not trespassing) were breaking the law. In every
case quoted, further investigation by the journos found that it was
not illegal. Some of the law enforcement agencies quoted were the
Chicago RTA and Union Pacific Railroad.

Whereas nobody did care at all of it in 2002.
