For those that haven't heard and can save themselves the four hour trip
my collegue has just had, there is massive disruption following a
``security alert'' (code words to local residents, a la last week). The
M1 is shut from 16 to 20, the M6 from 7 to 11 and the M5 from 1 to the
M6. The police report a ``bang'' from inside the cordon, which is being
investigated. There are diversions, but obviously road travel over the
whole of north Birmingham is a little awry.

Bescot marshalling yard, adjacent to the M6, is also shut, so Birmingham
to Walsall trains are terminating at Perry Barr, and other local rail
services may be affected (my knowledge of northern Birmingham rail lines
is sketchy).

People living within the area have been evacuated.

TrafficMaster reports the M1 J2 slip-roads are shut, following a
``controlled explosion''.

Other reports include a ``security alert'' on the railway line between
Peterborough and Northampton, but I wasn't really listening at that
point.
