            Creating Web pages using HTML

                        Bill Pugh

                Monday, Feb 12th, 4pm
	     Classroom building, room 111

This talk will explain how to create World-Wide Web pages
using HTML (Hyper-Text Markup Language). I'll explain:

    * the purpose and format of tags
    * headers, lists, paragraphs
    * character formats
    * Embedded images
    * Hypertext links
    * Tables
    * automatic checking of web pages
    * automatic conversion to/from HTML

With this information, you will be ready to start creating
your own web pages. Some previous experience with using a WWW browser
will be assumed. Some notes are available at
        http://www.cs.umd.edu/~pugh/intro-www-tutorial/

[The classroom building is building 106 on campus maps, located
at the corner of Stadium Drive and Paint Branch Drive]

                Java: beyond the Hype

It isn't everyday that a new programming language gets
on the cover of Business week. Java is a new programming
language that has advocated for writing programs that will be
automatically downloaded and executed when you visit a web page.
Press accounts suggest that Java will do everything from revolutionize
the software industry to giving you whiter and straighter teeth, but
don't do a good job of describing what makes Java special.

I will describe the technical details that make the Java language and
system unusual, how it differs from languages such as C++, and why
it is particularly well-suited for programming on the WWW.
