I'm looking for a place to get a 14.4 external modem repaired in the
College Park/Beltsville area. Any recommendations?

Thanks,
Carrie

With the new prices for 14.4 modems down under $100, you may not be
able to get anything but the simplest repair (like a frayed cable) for
less than the price of buying a new one.

Since modems generally follow manufacture-specific designs, I'd
contact the manufacturer and ask them to recommend somebody; I doubt
there's enough market to justify many non-brand-specific modem repair
shops.

Carrie,

Although you are probably not gonna like my $0.02 worth of advice, here
goes anyway: It will not make economic sense for you to repair that
modem. Unless there is a simple problem with the cable (if its an
external modem/sits outside the computer) or a bad AC adapter (for an
external modem), the problem usually is due to an electronic component
failure. A new internal 14.4 has a -higher than average- price of $69,
and an average price of $40-50 which is equivilant to the cost of getting
the modem fixed (at least $30-50) but you get a decent warranty when you
get a new modem. Also, you can take this opportunity to buy yourself a
28.8 (~$110). If you decide to go with a 28.8, make SURE to get a V.34
compliant model. Many stores are pushing the leftover V.FC class which
is non-industry standard for around ~$70-90.
