It's not actually as cute as it seems: SMTP in rfc821 specifies HELO as
the start of an SMTP transaction, SMTP Service Extensions in rfc1869
specifies that clients who wish to use the extensions begin with EHLO, and
either proceed if that works, or revert to HELO if it doesn't.
