ABSTRACT

As many people can remember, serious computer usage really began with a
large, powerful mainframe computer driving many dumb, or slightly
graphical, terminals. Technology then moved the computing power to the
desktop with powerful PC's and unix machines running applications
locally. With the advent of the Network Computer and Sun's Java
workstations, it appears that a combination of both technologies is the
future. This talk will give a brief history of computer usage, but
will be mainly concerned with where the future of computing appears to
be going.

An example of how this technology can be used will be shown using
JavaStations, including Web browsing; using Java-based X, ICA and ASCII
emulators for access to other systems; and native Java applications.
Note that this will not be a sales pitch, but more a technical
discussion of where the industry is heading and the problems that must
be overcome if this is to be achieved.

Stuart Remphrey currently works as a Systems Engineer with Sun
Microsystems, dealing mainly with Solaris on Sun servers. He has 15
years in the industry and has also worked as a Systems Engineer with
Pyramid, Wang and Lionel Singer Corporation, specialising in Unix based
systems.
