MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Delegate,
SAGE-AU is proud to be presenting our sixth and largest conference on System
Administration so far. This year the conference will be held in Canberra at
Old Parliament House which will provide a very formal backdrop to our excellent
overseas speakers and our less than formal membership.
SAGE-AU is going from strength to strength and our annual conference is the
culmination of our year. Following a year which has seen the introduction of
many new member services, and subsequently a significant number of new members,
we expect to see the halls of parliament full of System Administrators
networking and solving each others problems much as we do through our mailing
list and other services.
Please take full advantage of the excellent tutorials and the conference
proper. I and the SAGE-AU executive look forward to meeting you all at the
conference.
Craig Bishop
President SAGE-AU
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
Barbara L. Dijker
Barb Dijker is currently a system and network consultant with Labyrinth
Computer Services, the Executive Director and co-founder of the Colorado
Internet Cooperative Association, the principal manager and co-founder of
another ISP called NeTrack that serves customers world-wide, and finally an
elected Executive of the USENIX Systems Administrators' Guild (SAGE). Recently
Barb has been instrumental in forming The Mountain Area Exchange - a US
regional Internet exchange. Barb gained her experience working on the front
lines in the University of Colorado Computer Science Dept for more than 4 years
and prior to that at U S WEST, Lockheed-Martin, and Computer Sciences Corp. She
has taught for Addison-Wesley, Digital Equipment Corp, and at conferences in
the USA, Europe, Brazil, and Asia.
Andrew Tridgell
Andrew Tridgell is a PhD student at the Australian National University in
Canberra. While trying to set a record for the longest time spent
procrastinating over a PhD Andrew has worked on a number of free software
projects including Samba, rsync, JitterBug, Linux/AP+ and KnightCap. Andrew
also enjoys playing chess and ultimate frisbee.
Marcus J. Ranum
Marcus Ranum is CEO of Network Flight Recorder, Inc., and has been specializing
in Internet security since he built the first commercial firewall product in
1989. He has acted as chief architect and implementor of several other notable
security systems including the TIS firewall toolkit, TIS Gauntlet firewall,
whitehouse.gov, and the Network Flight Recorder. Marcus frequently lectures on
Internet security issues, and is co-author of the "Web Site Security
Sourcebook" with Avi Rubin and Dan Geer, published by John Wiley and sons.
TUTORIALS
Time
Monday 6 July 1998
9.00 - 12.30 PM
T01 - ISP SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION, BARBARA L. DIJKER
An ISP environment provides some specific challenges. The user community is
highly dynamic and demanding, the security vulnerability is hostile, and the
growth rate is astronomical. This tutorial will illustrate the potential
associated problems and will provide tips to meet these challenges specific to
ISPs - both technology and policy. We'll discuss typical pitfalls in problems
faced by ISPs and how they can be best avoided or solved.
T02 - DOCUMENTATION TECHNIQUES FOR SYSTEM ADMINISTRATORS, MICHAEL CIAVARELLA
System Administrators employ a variety of tools and skills in their day-to-day
work. However there is one skill area which has traditionally been ignored,
overlooked, or "left until we have time". That skill is the ability to produce
effective documentation. This tutorial covers basic techniques for writing
effective documentation, and improving your existing documentation practises.
1.30 - 5.00 PM
T03 - MANAGING ACCEPTABLE USE (INC. SPAM), BARBARA L. DIJKER
This is a follow-on to the ISP System Administration tutorial. It has become
clear that "netiquette" is not longer sufficient to ensure everyone plays
nicely on the Internet. If something can be done, there appears to be some user
who wants to do it - using your network. Managing acceptable use is much more
than itemizing disallowed activities.
T04 - PC/MACINTOSH INTEROPERABILITY, LUBOSH HANUSKA
This tutorial will present the basics of interoperability of IBM PC compatible
and Apple Macintosh desktop systems, give ideas on where and how to start
depending on the current situation, and suggest strategic directions for
future proofing the mixed site. A current site at the ANU will be presented as
case study, and real life examples from this site will be given through the
tutorial.
Time
Tuesday 7 July 1998
9.00 - 5.00 PM
T05 - SECURE COMMUNICATIONS OVER OPEN NETWORKS, MARCUS J. RANUM
This tutorial is intended to teach the experienced network and system manager
how to build and deploy a wide range of secure communication tools. Tools are
discussed within the overall context of communication security and
appropriateness.
Topics will range from the highly paranoid, including basic spycraft and covert
channels, to the practical, such as building your own VPN router or operating
PGP. We will cover actual configurations, set-up procedures, and command lines
for software packages on BSD UNIX.
9.00 - 12.30 PM
T06 - TCL AND JAVA, STEVE BALL
This tutorial describes Tcl Blend, Jacl and the Tcl Bean, and how to write
applications that integrate both Tcl and Java, gaining the best features of
each. These products allow Tcl to be integrated with Java, and are a boon to
both Tcl/Tk and Java application developers - Tcl gets a cross-platform
extension language and Java gets a mature, robust scripting environment.
1.30 - 5.00 PM
T07 - PERL 5 DISTRIBUTION AND MODULE INSTALLATION GUIDE, ANTHONY DAVID
This tutorial covers installing these products on Solaris, HP/UX 9.x, Linux,
MacOS and Windows NT. The rationale of the Configure script will be discussed
and some of the more useful non-default options will be described including
managing multiple releases and using newer features such as the experimental
threading facilities. I will briefly outline the installation of DBI and DBD
for Oracle Postgres and mSQL-mySQL, Tk, LWP and Apache modules. The CPAN online
installer will also be described.
Time
Wednesday 8 July 1998
9.00 - 5.00 PM
T08 - AUDITING - THE UNEXPECTED ALLY, GEOFF HALPRIN
As a system administrator, the audit is the most valuable tool in your arsenal
when it comes to dealing with management. It should be your primary tool for:
convincing management that there is a problem that needs addressing; educating
management as to the true nature and complexity of your role; and planning
technical improvement works to a site.
This workshop will introduce the concepts and principles of audits, examine in
detail how to conduct an audit, and look at how to present the results of that
work to management in the form of a formal audit report.
9.00 - 12.30 PM
T09 - INTRUSION DETECTION AND NETWORK FORENSICS, MARCUS J. RANUM
What can intrusion detection do for you? Intrusion detection systems are
designed to alert network managers to the presence of unusual or possibly
hostile events within the network. Once you've found traces of a hacker, what
should you do? What kind of tools can you deploy to determine what happened,
how they got in, and how to keep them out? This tutorial provides a highly
technical overview of the state of intrusion detection software and the types
of products that are available, as well as the basic principles to apply for
building your own intrusion detection alarms. Methods of recording events
during an intrusion are also covered.
1.30 - 5.00 PM
T10 - SAMBA, ANDREW TRIDGELL
This tutorial will go into the SMB protocol and Samba in depth. It will be
technically oriented with large amounts of time being spent looking at sniffer
dumps to reveal the mysteries of browsing and SMB authentication. I'll also be
demonstrating some of the newer features in Samba, such as NT domain logins
and a GUI administration interface. Here is your chance to tell me what you
hate about Samba and what you want added in a forum where I can't just delete
your email.
