          JOIN THE USC
    Sierra Student Coalition
  ****************************

The Sierra Student Coalition is the student-run activist program of the
Sierra Club, one of the nation's oldest, largest, and most effective
environmental organizations. If you want to make a difference in the
environment, the USC Sierra Student Coalition (SSC) is for you.

Founded in 1991 by 17-year-old Sierra Club member and Los Angeles resident
Adam Werbach, the Sierra Student Coalition has quickly blossomed into an
activist network of thousands of young people stretching across the United
States and Canada. We are the only national, student-run grassroots
network working within a major environmental organization to move the
student agenda.

Deeply committed to environmental and social justice and social justice
issues, we are spreading these priorities into the mainstream
environmental movement. Praised in a best-selling book as "the most
exciting thing to happen to the environmental movement in a long time,"
the SSC inititates and organizes national, regional, and local issue
campaigns, uniting individual students, campus groups, and environmental
organizations in efforts to achieve positive change. We are dedicated to
making students the most effective, responsible activists they can be.

What We've Accomplished: Already, since its inception, the SSC has trained
hundreds of activists, organized tens of thousands of students behind
national campaigns, and registered hundreds of thousands of new voters.

Diversity and Environmental Justice: The SSC is committed to ethnic and
cultural diversity we want all students to be able to create and
participate in all our programs. Scholarships are available to SSC
training programs for students who could not otherwise attend. Our
environmental justice agenda addresses issues like ensuring clean, safe
drinking water, highlighting the injustice of toxic waste dump sites, and
preventing lead poisoning.

Grassroots Direction: As a student-run organization, we're tuned into your
opinions, questions, and needs. The campaigns and strategies we choose are
based on what we hear from our SSC student activists. The body that makes
decisions about the organization, the Executive Committee, is open to all
members through popular election.
