Issue B2
News
----
[Ottawa] Government source released the 1997 annual immigration plan.
Within the plan, the number of skill worker immigrants is set between
82000 and 90000, business immigrants between 20000 and 23000, family
immigrants and other special classes between 66900 and 74700, and
refugee between 26100 and 32300. This reflects an approximately 23%
increase of skill worker immigrants, and 11% increase of business
immigrants from last year's plan. The increase is good news for
independent immigrants. However, critics say the quota for independent
immigrants is still low and that for refugees is high. Experts believe
that there will be a significant increase of the number of qualified
applicants from Asia and Eastern Europe countries. Large number of
applications are also expected from foreign students who are currently
studying or have achieved degrees in U.S or Canadian universities. So
the selection process of immigrants will be very competitive in
1997.
[Ottawa] The Minister of Citizenship and Immigration announced fee
changes for business permanent residence applications, visitor visas,
and several citizenship and immigration services. For business
application, the processing fee increases from $CAD 825 to $CAD 1000.
There is no change on the right of landing fee and the processing fee
for other permanent residence application. There is a small increase
of the fees for visitor visa, employment authorization and other
services. The new fees are scheduled to take effect in Jan. 1997.
Will applying for permanent residence of Canada cause the loss of my
current citizenship?
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Not, becoming a permanent resident of Canada will not cause your
native citizenship to lose. However, you should consider this question
when you apply for citizenship of Canada. Immigrants who have resided
in Canada for more than 3 years after landing will be eligible for
Canadian citizenship, and almost all immigrants apply for Canadian
citizenship when they are eligible. Canada allows dual citizenship.
But there are some other countries that do not. For immigrants coming
from those countries, applying for Canadian citizenship will cause
the loss of their native citizenship.
I have limited financial resource. Is it possible that I apply for the
immigration first, and when it is successful my family then apply?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The answer is yes. You can apply for immigration without including
your family members. In that case you do not need to pay the
processing fees and the right of landing fees for your family members.
Some people do this to avoid the loss of extra processing fees (for
their family members) in case that visa is not successful. It is also
good that the principle applicant comes to Canada first to settle down
(e.g. finding a place to live, a job or schooling, etc.) And then
his/her family come to join he/she later. There is no problem to apply
for family member's immigrant visas later. The drawback is that the
processing of family member's visas may take several months (but
generally much faster than the independent immigrant visas).
I have a cousin who is a permanent resident of Canada. Does this mean
that I can get bonus point in my immigration application?
--------------------------------------------------------------------
This is not the case. You can get bonus point only if you have a
brother, sister, parent, grandparent, niece, nephew, aunt or uncle who
is a permanent resident or Canadian citizen of age over 19 and who is
currently living in Canada. To get the bonus point, you are required
to submit copy of your relative's identification (e.g. his/her
citizenship card, passport, ...), and a document proving your
relationship with him/her.
