User Services SIG May meeting:
Tasmania Online
Date: Monday 13th May 1996
Time: 5:30 - 7pm
Venue: Tasmania Online offices, State Library, Bathurst St Hobart. The
offices are located near the rear entrance to the foyer on the ground
level, look for the User Services signs.
This talk will focus on Tasmania Onlines experience in teaching a wide
variety of people the skills to create and maintain their own web pages.
The clients dealt with come from a wide variety of backgrounds and
levels of computer expertise. The problems that emerge reflect the wide
range of skills required for Web publishing: computer-based concepts
(such as files and directories), html editing, handling graphics,
information content, and graphic design issues.
About Tasmania Online:
Tasmania Online is a new service provided by the State Library at
http://www.tased.edu.au/tasonline/
The goal of this service is to comprehensively index and provide access
to all Web sites on the Internet that have Tasmanian content or that
reside in Tasmania. As part of this service, an A to Z listing of sites
and a subject index is provided. Non-profit community groups are
assisted in mounting their own pages on the Internet. Training, access
to computer equipment, and web server space is provided.
Tasmania Onlines philosophy is that support for Web publishing has to
go beyond normal software support and should include assisting the user
to maximise the quality of the end result. The support provided has to
be designed to empower the individual with the skills and confidence to
deal with a constantly changing set of standards and possibilities.
