Explanatory note:  David Fanshawe is an English composer who spent
several years between 1969 and 1972 traveling and recording music in
Africa.  The AFRICAN SANCTUS is an unorthodox, highly rhythmic setting
of the Latin mass text.  It incorporates recordings of music of a
variety of styles and cultures - Islamic prayer chants, a Masai
milking song, wedding music from Egypt, courtship dances from Sudan, a
burial dance from Kenya, and dances, a "rain song", a song of the
river, and a lament for the dead from Uganda.
