Hello:
The number of FALSE 911 calls have been increasing at
UVA. People will accidentally call 911 and then just hang up.
Their call is recorded on the dispatcher's console. The
dispatcher will call the phone number it received and either
get no answer from that phone or get an answering machine.
When this happens, 2 officers are sent to the residence
to find out the reason for the attempted 911 call, just in case
the caller was interrupted with their call or is injuried.
We have been getting ALOT of false 911 calls. The caller
will not answer the phone when the dispatcher calls back. When
I arrive at these calls, the callers will sometimes say that they
didn't want to get into trouble by calling 911 accidentally or
weren't sure what to do so did nothing.
       Please...if you accidentally called 911, don't worry.
Don't hang up on the dispatcher. Just tell them that you
accidentally dialed the wrong number. You can't get into
trouble for accidentally calling 911. If you don't talk to the
dispatcher, police officers will appear at you dorm room, home,
or office (where ever the phone is), and investigate.
The number of these false 911 calls is great and takes
time away from officer's duties and other task. The officers
need to stay available for REAL emergencies.
If you need to call 911 please do. If you accidentally
called 911, talk to the dispatcher on the line and let them
know what happened.
      Thank you.
