Carl Allen Press Release
Live jazz returns to newly remodeled Old Cabell Hall at the
University of Virginia Friday, February 2nd, as WTJU-FM and PK
German of University Union, present drummer Carl Allen and his
quintet in concert.
Allen's 1995 recording on the Atlantic label, "Testimonial," is
a riveting blend of gospel music's spirituality with a deep
jazz sensibility. That album, Allen's second U.S. release as a
leader, features an all-star lineup of younger players who are
leaders in their own right. Two of those, saxophonist Vincent
Herring and trumpeter Nicholas Payton, will accompany Allen in
his Charlottesville appearance. Jazz fans who attended the
Elvin Jones concert during JAZZFEST II at Old Cabell will
recall Payton's brilliant performance.
Originally from Milwaukee, Carl Allen attended the University
of Wisconsin from 1979 to 1981, and then studied music at
Willam Patterson College in New Jersey. He then signed up for
a long stint as drummer and music director with trumpet star
Freddie Hubbard from 1982 until 1990. Over the years he has also
performed with Jackie Mclean, Sonny Stitt and many others, and
has appeared on numerous recordings.
Besides his musical artistry, Allen is also a savvy businessman
who recognizes the difficulties and stereotypes that come with
trying to lead a band from the drummer's position. To make
himself better known to the public, Allen conducts many drum
clinics around the country and started his own recording company with
longtime friend Vincent Herring.
Allen believes, like his heroes Art Blakey, Elvin Jones and
others, that a musician should also be a leader, setting good
examples for younger musicians and reaching out to help them
along the way. He strives to change the old concept of the
irresponsible jazzman and feels that musicians should exhibit strong
character and musical ability.
The Concert at Old Cabell Hall will begin promptly at 8:00 P.M.
Tickets are $8.00 for students and over age 65 and $10.00 for
the general public. Under 18 are admitted free. Tickets are
available in advance at all Plan 9 locations, Williams Corner
Books, and the new Peabody Information Desk on the main floor of
Peabody Hall, UVA. For further information call WTJU at
