WTJU 1997 Jazz Marathon General Press Release
WTJUs Jazz Marathon is on the way! It begins this year at 8:00 A.M. on
Friday, October 17th and continues for eight days of jazz until late
night Friday, October 24th. During that time, you'll hear a variety of
jazz and blues programming to make even Philadelphia and Washington, DC
listeners jealous. 91.1 WTJU-FM is now broadcasting from our new and
improved antenna tower and we welcome jazz and blues fans tuning in from
the valley as well as points east, south and north. Special features of
this year's fund drive include "Blue Note Sunday," eleven hours/five
programs highlighting the music of this great label. In addition, you
will find every variety of music from blues to rhythm & blues, the roots
of jazz to free form experimentation, reggae with a jazz beat, to acid
jazz, and even Celtic jazz.
Is WTJU hosting a jazz concert during the marathon this year? You'd
better believe it! As a special event during our 1997 Jazz Marathon
fund-raiser, WTJU-FM presents the contemporary jazz quartet Plunge in
concert at UVAs Old Cabell Hall on Sunday, October 19th at 7:30 PM.
Plunge is an eclectic improvisational quartet that scored an underground
and college hit with their 1996 Accurate Records release Falling With
Grace, whose unusual instrumentation of tuba, trombone/alphorn, bass
and drums, was praised by jazz purists and acid-jazz audiences alike.
Opening up for Plunge will be the new Greg Howard Quartet in its
Charlottesville debut. This unusual group consists of Greg on Stick,
Robert Jospe (leader of Inner Rhythm) on drums, Darrell Rose of the
Afrikan Drum Festival on Afrikan Percussion, and Ken Parielle on
guitar. Joining the Quartet for this performance will be trumpeter and
director of the UVA Jazz Ensemble John Dearth, who recently completed a
tour with Bruce Hornsby. Call WTJU for ticket information.
Another event concurrent with the marathon is the 2nd Annual, WTJU Jazz
Marathon Swing Hop Dance. This year the dance will be held in the
Ballroom of Newcomb Hall on October 17th from 8:00 P.M. until Midnight.
Look for WTJU DJs Tom Morgan, Steven Soghoian, and Professor Bebop to
spin classic swing and R&B discs while you trip the light fantastic.
Not versed in swing dance? Kay Gulding and Gary Davenport will be on
hand to offer a quick lesson in East Coast Swing and Fox-trot dance
styles if you come at 8:00. We request a $6.00 donation for entry and
this an alcohol and smoke free event.
Finally, we hope to hear from all of you this year by way of your
pledges, and to see you this year by way of your pledges, and to see you
at some of the live presentations. Enjoy the Event!
Program guides for the jazz marathon are available in over 80 locations
