WTJU Jazz Marathon Concert

As a special event during our 1997 Jazz Marathon fund-raiser, WTJU-FM
presents the contemporary jazz quartet Plunge in concert at UVAs Old
Cabell Hall, 7:30 PM on Sunday, October 19th . Plunge is an eclectic
improvisational quartet that scored an underground and college hit with
their 1996 Accurate Records release Falling With Grace, whose unusual
instrumentation of tuba, trombone/alphorn, bass and drums, was praised
by jazz purists and acid-jazz audiences alike. In a four-star review,
Downbeat magazine called the groups work a remarkable debutsoulful,
vivacious. The CD was a finalist for Best Contemporary Jazz recording
of 1996 at the National Association of Independent Record Distributors
convention held earlier this year.

Leader and trombonist Mark McGrain is a former Berklee School of Music
faculty member, and author of the textbook Music Notation published by
Hal Leonard. Joining McGrain on tuba is Kirk Josepha founding member
of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and renowned drummer/composer Bob Moses
(in Charlottesville recently as a guest of the UVA Jazz Ensemble).

Opening up for Plunge will be the new Greg Howard Quartet in its
Charlottesville debut. This unusual group consists of Greg on Stick,
Robert Jospe (leader of Inner Rhythm) on drums, Darrell Rose of the
Afrikan Drum Festival on Afrikan Percussion, and Ken Parielle on
guitar. Joining the Quartet for this performance will be trumpeter and
director of the UVA Jazz Ensemble John Dearth, who recently completed a
tour with Bruce Hornsby.

Tickets for this concert, which is a benefit for WTJU-FM, are $8 for
students and $12 for the general public. Those under 18 will be
admitted free. Tickets are available at all locations of Plan 9 Music,
Williams Corner Books, and at the Newcomb Hall 4th floor accounting
office. For more information, call WTJU at (804) 924-0885.
