WTJU's Jazz Marathon is almost here! It begins this year at 9:00 A.M.
on Friday, October 11th and continues for eight days of jazz until
late night Friday, October 18th. This year, in the spirit of the
event," we present a number of special shows in addition to the
thematic programs that are the heart and soul of every marathon. You
can hear a variety of music from blues to rhythm & blues and from the
roots of jazz to free form experimentation and everything in-between.

Judging from all the great feedback on last year's fund-raiser, the
Jazz Marathon has become an annual event eagerly awaited by a majority
of the music-loving public, much as the Virginia Film Festival is to
movie buffs. Unlike other public radio/tv fund-raisers, our
less-frequent pledge breaks take a back seat to the music itself.
That pithy phrase, 924-3418, 924-3959," becomes a sort of mantra
after a few days.

We are thrilled to bring another major concert to Old Cabell Hall.
Saxophonist Odean Pope and his trio will perform at 8:00 PM, Sunday,
October 13 as part of the marathon. In addition to leading his trio,
Mr. Pope has been the saxophonist in Max Roach's quartet for many
years, and he continues to perform and record with his Saxophone
Choir. In addition, to the concert, there will be a free saxophone
workshop open to the public from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m. at Garrett Hall,
UVA.

On Saturday, October 12, the WTJU Jazz Marathon Sock Hop makes its
debut at UVA's Alumni Hall at 9:00 P.M. WTJU DJ's Tom Morgan, Steven
Soghoian, Charles Peale and Professor Bebop will spin classic swing
and R&B discs while you trip the light fantastic. Not versed in swing
dance? Members of the Charlottesville Swing Dance Society will be on
hand to offer a quick lesson if you come early at 8:00.

A new tradition that began last year, a Thursday night live broadcasts
of area musicians from the Prism Coffeehouse, continues with a concert
hosted by multi-faceted Chapman Stick player Greg Howard. Greg will
perform with Tim Reynolds in conjunction with the CD release of their
1991 duo recording. In addition to Greg and Tim, Darrell Rose and
other special guests will be on hand. Admission is free with your
paid pledge to WTJU.

Finally, as always, other area musicians such as John Dearth and
George Melvin will donated their time to WTJU by coming into the
studio and hosting special shows. We hope to hear from all of you
this year by way of your pledges, and to see you this year by way of
your pledges, and to see you at some of the live presentations. Enjoy
the Event!

Program guides for the jazz marathon are available in over 60
locations in and around Charlottesville. The guide can also be found
