Mr. Eduardo D'Azevedo, CS Graduate Student, will speak
on ``Optimal Triangulation for Piecewise Linear
Approximation''.
TIME: 1:30 PM
ROOM: DC3540
ABSTRACT
In this talk, we show how coordinate transformation
techniques can be used to generate optimal triangular
meshes for function approximation. Although the main
area of application is in finite element computation,
we use the model problem of piecewise linear
interpolation to demonstrate the techniques. The
transformation maps the original plane in which the
error properties of the data function are variable and
in which the error properties of the data function are
variable and directional to a ``flat'' space where the
error function has uniform, non-directional properties.
Using this approach, we discuss two optimal meshing
problems, optimal incidence relationship for
arbitrarily space data points and optimal placement of
mesh vertices.
