The amount of watering depends heavily on the type of soil, type of
grass, level of sunlight etc.
A rule of thumb is 1" per week; for a large lawn, this will be a huge
amount of water.
When you state that the revolving sprinkler you bought "spreads out 45
square feet of water", that is a tiny amount of ground; do you
actually mean a 45 foot stream of water, thus covering about 1590
square feet? A typical impact sprayer will cover this (if you put it
up on a 6 foot pole, it will cover significantly more).

Using the above 1590 ft^2 assumption, and a 5-gallon/minute water flow
(which is typical), then it will take 3.3 hours to put down an inch of
water over that area. If you water every day, it will take 28 minutes
each day to put down one inch per week, and for the area will be close
to 1000 gallons each week.

Infrequent or shallow waterings are not good for the lawn, as it tends
to draw the roots near the surface.
