The Air Weather Association Reunion will be held in Hampton, Virginia from
1-5 May 1996. The association was chartered in 1987 for men and women who=
se
armed forces careers were with Air Force weather support units =97 past and
present. Over 650 members of this unique group of more than 4,000 are
expected to enjoy the many activities and tour opportunities in the area
while remembering past challenges and accomplishments. Military operations
can be extremely weather sensitive and, therefore, Air Force weather units
are needed to provide weather observations, airborne weather reconnaissance=
,
weather forecasts and warnings for flight safety and the protection of
resources, and in addition, specialized support for unique weapons systems
and tailored weather support for the planning and carrying out of a wide
variety of worldwide missions.
The Langley Air Force Base area was chosen for this reunion in part because
50 years ago, the headquarters of the US Army/Air Force Weather Service mov=
ed
to Langley for a short time and in March of 1946 at Langley, the headquarte=
rs
was redesignated the Air Weather Service which is still in existence today =
at
Scott AFB, Illinois (near Saint Louis, Missouri). The reunion group will
tour Langley AFB on Friday morning, 3 May. =20
Nostalgia binds this group together, but they not only remember the past,
they serve the present and help recognize excellence in the current Air For=
ce
weather units. During the reunion, an awards banquet will be held to honor
the five Outstanding Air Force Weather personnel of the Year. We salute th=
e
members of the Air Weather Association for their past and present service a=
nd
wish them =93a great reunion with fair skies.=94
