Highly dependent on the space between each of the cars. My rule is that if
there is no one behind me, and the spacing is 100yds or more, I will pop in and
out, signaling each time. If for nothing else to demonstrate to the other
drivers that I respect the left lane.

If someone is reasonably close behind me, I will pop into a much shorter gap,
but expect them to step on it and come past. If they don't, I'll probably pull
back out in front of them as I reach the end of the gap and next time won't pull
over unless the gap is very large.

And BTW, I don't consider a high beam flash as a personal attack.

But most people don't want to be bothered with having to change lanes, signal,
etc. They just would rather sit in the left lane and stay there. Some could
care less who is behind them, some will move over only if someone comes up
behind them, some a$$holes will speed up if you try to pass them on the right.

Its all about courtesy and consideration (as is turn signal use, if you think
about it).

"Passing" does have some grey areas. There is pass approaching, overtaking and
clearing. People's definitions of the length and duration of each of these
differs. My approach nd clears tend to be very short. Some people will just
rationalize that if theirs are long enough, it warrants them to just stay in the
left lane as they are technically "approaching" that minivan 300 yds down the
road...

But go back to where you were, ie in the left lane, when you aren't passing
anyone? If so, you are part of the problem. People need to think of that
passing lane as though it is one with oncoming traffic. You don't stay there
unless you NEED to be there.

Understood. I don't agree with the speed limit laws in many places. Put the
lane use laws were designed not to generate revenue, but to ensure smooth, and
effective use of all lanes where vehicles are traveling at differing speeds.
What part of that don't you agree with?

To some degree. I agree it begins to get unreasonable when traffic *density*
gets to a certain (very high) threshold. But a practice, the left lane should
be reserved for passing *everywhere* and every driver should embrace that.

<sigh>

We're still not there. It has *nothing* to do with "how fast that lane is
going!!! Or if you can "handle" the 150 mph!!! It is not the 150mph lane!! it is
the PASSING lane!!!! If you are going 17 mph, but still passing other cars,
you have every right to be there. How hard is that to understand!?

I give up.
