Notes-to-News software

There is a discussion now taking place on DECUServe in the DECUSERVE_FORUM
notefile regarding a News <> DECUServe gateway.

The evolving thread seems to be heading to implementation in several
phased steps, after which the results of the step would be evaluated
before moving ot the next step. My best guess right now that the most
likly implementation would be read only groups for a couple conferences
as pilots (assuming of course, that anything at all gets approved).

I'd like to start gathering current info on what notes-to-news software
exists, and is in use.

I'm aware of three; one is a version done by Dec; anyone know any
contacts? I also am aware that someone did an implementation in
Mumps; I also have crude version in DCL and FORTRAN. I'd like to
identify the best software to implement this, while looking to the
future of possibly adding the ability for subscriber or general
posts (not necessarily there now, but doable in the future).

George Carrette did one that converts the content of an extract/unseen to a
news batch. I'm currently using it to produce a read only gateway for the
ISVNET notes files. The source was posted to VMSNET.SOURCES. I fixed a couple
of small problems (it needed to be able to deal with mail headers) and passed
the modified source back to George for reposting.

The tools needed are:

        news-to-notes (vmsnet.sources)
        deliver (ditto)
Notes Extractor, initial population of notes files (command procedure)
Notes Extractor, production tracking of notes files (command procedure)
Mail connection between extractor and gateway.

The whole read only gateway took about 6 hours to put together, including a
fair amount of hand holding to do the initial uploading of the ISVNET notes
files. If you want me to do it for you, let me know and I'll set it up.

p.s. If you are working in "conjunction" with DEC, you might want to take a
look at PAN (an internal production, Pete N Andy's notes tool) which might do
yeoman's service for the other direction of the gateway.

I did something, originally for the purpose of handling stuff
a little better on the DEC ISV NETWORK notes, and posted it
to vmsnet.sources a while back.

Monroe@DMC.COM added to this, and evidently has some procedures to
run in the VMS BATCH queue which will mail messages to his MX MAILER
mailer server and then insert stuff into a news stream.

I think I wrote the stuff in C and DCL.
