The story I heard from our local account manager is:
"It doesn't stand for anything. That's why it was used!"
Something about problems with trademarks. Anyway, I believe he said that
that there is going to be some sort of a contest to "name the Alpha", and
come up with a meaning for AXP.
PS.
Have you heard about the Ada implementation? Ada is not like any of the
other languages under VMS. The command structure is similar to the
"SET something" commands. "ACS COMPILE", "ACS LINK", etc.. (I don't
know these anymore.) Anyway, "ACS" has some "official meaning" which
does NOT use the initials "A.C.S.". As I heard it, ACS originally stood
for "Ada Control System", but that that name was dropped. Kind of like
STARLET.... Anyway, this all leads me to think that AXP *DOES* have some
meaning -- at least, unofficially.
