Sorry for the easy questions, I am Internet-illiterate!

What is the significance of a "!" in an internet address ?
I often see addresses from the INFO-VAX mailing list with several
internet domain names separated by a "!".
For example:

From: MX%"address1.vms.edu!address2.vms.edu!sabotkap@woods.ulowell.edu"
			   ^ ^

While I'm posting, what does a "%" mean as well in an internet mail address
after a username?

If I read wording of RFC 819 correct, then:

Only woods.ulowell.edu in this address have internet address.
All left from that address are supposed that woods.ulowell.edu
know what it is.

That address1.vms.edu!address2.vms.edu!sabotkap seems to me
as some sort UUCP-bang address. That is valid
'local part' in the BNF specification (in Appendix A of RFC 819).
